Who We Are
Bali Artisans is an association that belongs to local non-profit-organisation, the Wahana Kria Putri Foundation, which provides service and support to disadvantaged men and women. Many of them are skilled in craftmaking and have the potential to turn their talent into a business; earning an income to support themselves and their family. Due to the competitive nature of the handcraft business in Bali, many home-based producers are overshadowed by larger manufacturers and also commonly tricked by fraud. Bali Artisans is simply there to provide a safe platform to showcase their work and create opportunities to find potential customers locally and abroad.
The People We Work With
Local men and women who are impoverished, unemployed, uneducated, disabled, or widowed with young children. They live in rural areas with limited access to transportation, electricity, clean water and medical care. Some of them reside in densely populated urban slums where sanitation is poor and personal space is almost non-existent. They work either independently or as a group, usually consisting of members from the same village. Most of them already have a skill in craft-making, but those who do not have any are given training by their peers.

Services to the Poor
Our Business Services Development (BDS) program provides comprehensive training to the crafts men and women. These include: product design and trend analysis, packaging, pricing, profit and loss management, cashflow management,marketing strategies, occupational health & safety, group support management and counselling. Bali Artisans also helps them find more customers by creating marketing tools such as product catalogues and an internet website, as well as organise events like markets and exhibitions.
Quality Products
Bali Artisans rely on the talent of the local craftspeople to produce unique handmade products. These include homeware, giftware, jewelley, textiles, clothing incense and candles. Our artisans are trained in quality control and practise responsible usage of raw materials such as repurposed wood, renewable bamboo, and recycled plastic.
Practising Fair Trade
An agreement was made between Bali Artisans and partner craft producers in the following way: 70% of the money earned from sales is given to the craft producer and the remaining 30% goes to Bali Artisans to cover the cost of overheads, as well as funding towards future project activities. When a purschase order is made, the producers are given a 50% deposit to cover raw material purchases and wages during production. Continous training and support are offered by Bali Artisans until they are no longer needed.
How You Can Help
- Be a conscious consumer: ask where the product came from and who the money goes to.
- If your favourite homeware, giftware, clothing or jewellery store does not stock any fairly traded products, let them know about us.
- If you are a retailer, consider having a look at what we have to offer. Please browse through our online products catalogue.
- Bali Artisans cannot operate without the help and generosity of our volunteers and donors. We thank you! Donations provide a huge relief to our project.
